A vocational training programme on “Bee Keeping Industry”, a collaborative effort of KVK, Kasaragod with HORTICORP, Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod Rural Development Society (KRDS), Kolichal was inaugurated on 18-09-12 at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra of CPCRI, Kasaragod.

Dr. George V.Thomas, Director, CPCRI inaugurated the programme and in the inaugural address, he highlighted the importance of beekeeping in enhancing agricultural production and rural employment opportunities ultimately leading towards overall development of agricultural sector of the country. Kasaragod being declared as an organic district, it has become honey bee friendly also, he added.

This programme is being organized in such a manner that the participants would be made  familiar to the component technologies of bee keeping such as colony organization, colony management, rainy season management of colonies, strengthening of colonies during growth period, division of colonies, pest and disease management, honey extraction, honey processing etc in a time bound manner.  The duration of the programme is 15 days as a round the year programme which also involves prompt exposure to bee keeping  industry through regular practical sessions rather than theoretical orientation.  A total of 35 participants attended the programme.  A similar programme is going on at Chittarickal Village, East Eleri Panchayath, Kasaragod.
